Events on a moving train are affected by motion and density of people on the platform, creating an interplay between those already in motion and those waiting to be in motion. A series of train carriages are redesigned to respond in 5 different ways according to 5 characteristics of commuters on Platform 13 in Flinders Street Station.
This design proposal is a commentary about the disconnect that people experience in transit and the games that people play, taking the train as a case study where people tend to get caught up in their own “worlds”. Using a series of motion, sound and density triggers on the station platform result in provocations within a moving train carriage, creating a subconscious a link between unconnected groups of people. These mechanisms take on a playful persona as accompanying travellers, creating a surreal dreamlike sequence within our everyday journeys.
