DIAMATE was conceived as an early-stage smartphone application prototype project, which targets a male audience of 35-40 year old Australians, who are burdened with Diabetes Type II, towards the objective of positively, and gamefully influencing these patients’ health behaviours. The project focuses on issues of isolation that Diabetes patients often feel by creating a social world that encourages loved ones and family members to participcate too. Progress is recorded through the ability to collect and exchange robot parts as well as unlocking new maps in the world. The app also features a picnic centre, medication log as well as medical hotline. The intrinsically motivating elements will establish the application as a companion–a (sometimes witty) mate, rather than a medical expert or an explicit exercise app. It will integrate and feed on an off-the-shelf sensor tracker, so that the user’s data generated can help steer user behavior, and create a feedback loop.
